Galapinhos Beach

Praia dos Galapinhos is often cited as one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches – and it lives up to the hype. This tranquil hideaway boasts crystal-clear waters that shimmer in shades of emerald and blue. Framed by lush Mediterranean vegetation and dramatic limestone cliffs, Galapinhos feels like a secret paradise. In fact, it was once named “Europe’s Best Beach,” so international travelers have started to take notice. Yet it remains unspoiled and relatively quiet, especially outside peak season.

Getting to Galapinhos requires a bit of effort, which is part of its charm. You can reach it via a short trek through the woods from the main road or, even easier, by strolling from neighboring Galápos beach – just a 5-minute scramble over some rocks at the shoreline. There are no big signs, which adds to the sense of discovery (keep an eye out for a dirt trail behind a bus stop on the road). Because of the limited access, there are fewer crowds and the atmosphere is peaceful. The beach itself is wider than Galápos, giving you space to spread out your towel on the soft sand. Facilities are minimal: in summer months you might find a small concession stand or vendor for drinks, and lifeguards are usually present along with a few parasols for rent. But mostly, Galapinhos is about immersing yourself in nature.

Popular activities here include swimming in the gentle, clear bay and snorkeling – the water visibility is fantastic, and you might spot schools of fish around the rocky outcrops. There’s plenty of shade near the tree line if you need a break from the sun. Do note that without direct road access, you should bring what you need (water, snacks, sunscreen) and wear sturdy sandals or sneakers for the trail. Praia dos Galapinhos offers a blissful escape where you can unwind to the sound of the waves and soak up a truly breathtaking landscape. It’s the kind of beach that makes you feel like an explorer who stumbled upon a hidden gem on the Portuguese coast.
