Praia de Galápos is a picturesque cove tucked along the Arrábida coast, offering clear turquoise waters and golden sand sheltered by high cliffs. It’s slightly larger than its famous neighbor Galapinhos, yet it still feels intimate and charming. The calm, translucent water here is fantastic for swimming – even a quick dip will refresh you on a hot day. Many also bring snorkel gear to peek at small fish near the rocky edges. Galápos has the conveniences that day-trippers appreciate: in summer you’ll find lifeguards on duty, a handy beach bar/restaurant for cold drinks and lunch, and sun umbrellas for hire dotting the shore. These amenities, coupled with the stunning view of the Arrábida hills meeting the sea, make it a perfect blend of comfort and natural beauty.
Access to Galápos is part of the adventure. You can drive towards Portinho da Arrábida and park at Praia do Creiro’s lot, then walk about 15 minutes up the road to the marked staircase that leads down to Galápos. (In peak summer, the road may be closed to private cars, so a shuttle bus from Setúbal or Figueirinha is a good alternative.) The trek is worth it – once you descend, you’re greeted by a panoramic vista of the serene bay. Galápos does attract crowds in July and August, as it’s one of the more accessible Arrábida beaches. If it’s too busy, a local tip is to wander over the rocks on the western end during low tide – this connects to Galapinhos beach. Otherwise, simply enjoy the lively atmosphere. After a few hours of sunbathing or floating in the gentle waves, you can grab a plate of fresh grilled fish at the beachside eatery and enjoy the laid-back, friendly setting. Praia de Galápos gives you that postcard-perfect scenery without requiring a very hard trek, which is exactly why visitors love it.
Aside from sunbathing and splashing in the gentle waves, visitors often try stand-up paddleboarding on Figueirinha’s tranquil waters. The beach is well-equipped too. In summer, there are lifeguards on duty, a café serving fresh snacks, and blue-and-white parasols and loungers available to rent. Praia da Figueirinha proudly flies the Blue Flag for its clean and safe environment. Getting here is easy – it’s the closest Arrábida beach to Setúbal city, accessible by car (parking is available, though it fills up fast) and even by a seasonal beach bus from town. Go on weekdays if you seek a more laid-back atmosphere, as weekends can get busy with locals. Whether you’re building sandcastles with kids or enjoying a peaceful paddle, Figueirinha welcomes you with a friendly vibe and beautiful scenery.
